     A novel advancement in surface improvement of light metals and their alloys is the microplasma oxidation (MPO), this technique has recently been studied as rapid and effective means to provide thick and hard ceramic coatings with excellent load bearing and wear resistance properties. The research in this thesis focuses on studying the suitable conditions for preparing ceramic coatings on magnesium alloys and the important factors affecting coating quality. Structural analysis, growth regulity, and corrosion mechanism of ceramic coating are studied as well.

     Among the surface processing technologies of magnesium alloys, micro plasma oxidization has characteristics of simple process, low cost, great potential and good performance of ceramic coatings, etc. which is generally recognized as the surface processing technologies of magnesium alloys with greatest potential. This paper aims to study the necessary conditions for preparing ceramic coatings and the factors affecting the growing rate and quality of the coatings, based on the technology of micro plasma oxidization of magnesium alloys. In addition, in this study, the growing pattern, structure and corrosion mechanism are discussed.
